Oscar nominations were announced this morning! Vox has the full list over here. As there are every year, plenty of things that could qualify snubs, and fewer surprises than you might think. (The Academy is mostly old white dudes who tend to reward tradition over innovation: remember that.)
Selma is nominated for Best Picture, but director Ava DuVernay didn’t get a nod for Best Director nor did David Oyelowo get Best Actor. Gone Girl was widely praised for its script this year but didn’t get in for Adapted Screenplay, though Rosamund Pike is up for Best Actress (GIVE IT TO HER. -L). And no women in any of the writing or directing categories, but “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie is a lock for Best Original Song, right??!
How are you feeling about these nominations?
I have more thoughts but to get started: how did THE LEGO MOVIE not make it in for Animated Feature??
I don’t care because Tale of Princess Kaguya is SOOOOO gorgeous. My main comment though is WHERE IS THE LOFT?
Robbed!! I hope Stonestreet carries this snub in his heart for years to come.
Serious question, though: American Sniper. Is it in because Clint Eastwood, because BCoops plays a beefy tragic American military hero, or because it’s a genuinely great movie?
THIS IS SUCH A TRAVESTY
EVERYTHING IS OSCARS
EVERYTHING IS GOLD WHEN YOU’RE WHITE WITH A PEEN
EVERYTHING IS OSCARS
WHEN YOU’RE LIVING THAT DREAM
Boy, that is a lot of movies about white dudes having complex emotions.
